Background
At the 2002 council and business meetings of the Methodology
Section, the possibility of establishing new Section awards was
discussed. The primary motivation is to encourage graduate students
and young scholars to pursue methodological research and empirical
research using advanced methods. This seemed particularly important
to the Section given the declining trend in membership. In addition,
a special fund, the Clogg Fund, exists under the control of the
Section, with a balance of about $2000. This fund was established
in 1995 for purpose of supporting a graduate student paper award.
It was based on some contributions from Sage Publications and
from members of the Section. However, the Section has not established
a mechanism to use the fund.
Action
At the 2003 Council Meeting of the Methodology Section in Atlanta,
the following items were passed unanimously:
1. The Clifford Clogg fund will be used to support graduate student
travel to the Section's winter or spring meetings, with Council's
preference being support for travel to the winter meetings. Travel
awards will be modest in amount. Students must submit an application,
with awards granted by conference organizers. The Clogg fund should
be replenished at regular intervals either through use of the
Section's regular funds or through donations to the Section.
2. The "Leo Goodman Award" recognizes contributions
to sociological methodology or innovative uses of sociological
methodology made by a scholar who is no more than 10 years past
Ph.D. It is awarded every other year.
3. The "Otis Dudley Duncan Lecture" is a public lecture
in which a distinguished scholar in sociology or a related field
is invited to give an overview or an in-depth discussion of cutting-edge
issues in a methodological area relevant to sociological research.
The lecture is given once a year, either at the summer ASA meeting
or winter/spring ASA Methodology Section meeting.
4. The Paul Lazarsfeld Award recognizes a career of scholarship
to sociological methodology. It is awarded every other year.
5. The Lazarsfeld and Goodman Awards will be given in alternate
years, with recipients determined by the award committee of the
Section.
