Subject: Quantitative Methodology Program Fellowship for doctoral studies in social science quantitative methodology

To encourage graduate students to pursue studies in social science quantitative methodology at the University of Michigan, the Quantitative Methodology Program (QMP) is announcing a new graduate fellowship program.  This multi-year fellowship program is interdisciplinary and is open to all doctoral students in a participating department/school who wish to pursue a research career in social science quantitative methodology.  This memo outlines the general terms of the fellowship and seeks cooperation from other units on campus.

A QMP graduate fellow must first be admitted into a doctoral program by a home department/school.  A 5-year funding package for the fellow will come from the combined resources of QMP and the home unit.  If your department/school elects to participate in the graduate fellowship program, your unit is committed to the terms outlined below.  Selection of QMP fellows is based on nominations from the graduate programs of the home units.

The terms of the fellowship are as follows:

Year 1:  Full fellowship provided by QMP to include pre-candidate tuition, fees, stipend, and health care for Fall and Winter terms.

Years 2 & 3: The admitting department will provide funding via GSIship, GSRA, or some other means of providing their normal level of graduate student support, which will include tuition waiver, salary level as per the current GEO contract and health care benefits for Fall and Winter terms.

Year 4: This year is considered a fellowship year.  The Department of Sociology has agreed to provide fellowship funding for QMP fellows in year four who are in the Sociology Program.  The College of LSA has agreed to provide funding to some non-Sociology but LSA students.  The funding includes candidate-level tuition, stipend, and health care for Fall and Winter terms.

Year 5: The home department/school will provide funding via GSIship, GSRA, or some other means of providing their normal level of graduate student support, which will include tuition waiver, salary level as per the current GEO contract and health care benefits for Fall and Winter terms.

Nominations from all participating departments/school are due on March 1, 2006.  The first fellowship will be given for the academic year 2006-2007.

The fellowship will be administered by the Quantitative Methodology Program (QMP).  QMP is an interdisciplinary program at the Survey Research Center (SRC) of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) at the University of Michigan. QMP promotes innovative research at the intersections of social science and statistical science and facilitates the training of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows who will contribute in significant ways to the development of statistical methodology for the advancement of empirical social science research.  More information about QMP is available at http://www.qmp.isr.umich.edu/.
